Kronospan Luxembourg is currently expanding its production capacity at the Sanem site and realizing a new production line. SWISS COMBI is supplying two impressive two-storey belt dryers for the plant, which will be used to dry sawdust for the chipboard industry.
The challenge: less than 2 percent residual moisture
Drying sawdust for the chipboard industry is quite challenging, as the water content must be brought below 2 percent during drying. If more residual moisture remains in the sawdust, steam bubbles can form on the surface of the chipboard during production, resulting in rejects. At the same time, the drying process should be as energy-efficient and low in CO2 emissions as possible.
The solution: drying with waste heat on two floors
On the two-storey belt dryer from SWISS COMBI, a product layer of sawdust is dried with warm air on the upper deck. At the end of the upper dryer, the sawdust falls onto the lower dryer with the help of gravity. In this way, a new, well-mixed product layer is created on the lower dryer, which is extremely important for uniform drying. The sawdust is then dried down to a maximum residual moisture content of 2 percent on the lower dryer.
Intelligent energy use thanks to combined heat and power production
The production of chipboard at Kronospan in Sanem is CO2-neutral: Waste wood is burned in a biomass furnace to produce steam. This steam is used to generate electricity for the production of chipboard. This generates waste heat, which we use to dry the sawdust on our belt dryers according to the principle of combined heat and power generation. This means that no additional heat energy is required for drying the sawdust.
